Manual lymphatic drainage: what should you ask at consultation?
A manual lymphatic drainage consultation should begin with what you feel, where you feel it and what you want assessed, rather than with the treatment name alone. Aura Medical Clinic describes manual lymphatic drainage as a technique using gentle, rhythmic and controlled hand movements, adapted to the treatment area and individual needs.
Aura discusses the service in relation to feelings of swelling or heaviness in the legs, relaxation, a sense of lightness, skin appearance and aesthetic body programmes. These are consultation topics, not a diagnosis or a promised outcome. If swelling is new, painful, one-sided or unexplained, ask whether another assessment is needed before considering an aesthetic treatment.
A consultation map
| Topic | What to prepare | What to ask Aura to explain |
|---|---|---|
| Concern | The area, sensation and when you noticed it. | Can manual drainage be considered, or is another assessment needed? |
| Area | Legs, abdomen/waist, arms or another body area. | Which area is being assessed, and why? |
| Method | Your questions about a hands-on treatment. | How will the movements and positioning be adapted? |
| History | Health information and recent procedures the team asks you to report. | Is there a reason to postpone, adapt or seek another assessment? |
| Sessions | Your calendar and other treatments you are considering. | How will the number, spacing and review point be decided? |
| Aftercare | Previous sensitivities or reactions. | What should you do afterwards, and when should you contact the clinic? |
This table structures the conversation. It does not determine suitability or create a universal session plan.
Describe the area and sensation in ordinary language
Before the appointment, note the body area you want to discuss and what you have noticed. It may be a feeling of heaviness in the legs, swelling, discomfort or an aesthetic concern about the skin’s appearance. Record when it began, whether it is constant or changes, and whether you have recently had another procedure.
Do not turn that description into your own diagnosis. The word “swelling” does not establish a cause or prove fluid retention. Ask what the team can assess at consultation and when a symptom should follow a different evaluation pathway.
Aura lists the legs, abdomen and waist, arms and other body areas as possible subjects for an individual plan. That does not mean every area is suitable for every person. The proposed area and objective should follow the assessment.
Understand what the manual method involves
Manual lymphatic drainage does not use the pneumatic-compression garment associated with pressotherapy. Aura describes a hands-on treatment using gentle, rhythmic and controlled movements in the planned areas.
Useful questions include:
- What is the proposed goal for my treatment area?
- How does a hands-on session take place?
- How will positioning and the approach be adapted for my comfort?
- Which information should I provide before the session?
- What might I feel during and after treatment?
- Which changes should I report to the clinic?
The purpose is not to select a technique from an article. It is to understand the proposal and how it will be individualised.
Establish suitability before discussing a course of sessions
Aura states that candidates are assessed by a specialist. Use the consultation to describe the concern, provide the information the team requests and mention recent procedures. Ask whether there is any reason not to proceed immediately, to modify the session or to obtain another assessment.
Do not stop other care or treatment because of an online guide. Report a new symptom, pain, redness, warmth, a one-sided change or anything you cannot explain before booking an aesthetic session.
Turn a proposal into a reviewable plan
Aura says that the treatment areas and session plan are determined after consultation according to individual needs. An initial number of appointments should therefore not be treated as a guarantee of outcome.
Ask the team to explain:
- the area and objective being discussed;
- what will be documented at the starting point;
- how the timing of appointments is decided;
- when the sensation or appearance of the area will be reviewed;
- what could change the plan; and
- what is included in the individual quotation.
A useful plan contains a review point. It should not promise removal of fluid, fat or cellulite, weight loss or a particular change in body shape.
Do not assume a combination is required
Aura’s service information mentions pressotherapy, Icoone Laser Med, BTL Exilis and BTL Emtone as treatments that may appear within personalised programmes. Their availability does not mean they should automatically be combined with manual lymphatic drainage.
If another treatment is proposed, ask what each element is intended to address, how the appointments would be organised, how response would be reviewed and what the quotation includes. Each part should have a clear purpose in the individual plan.
Clarify comfort, aftercare and communication
Ask how to prepare for the appointment, what clothing may be practical and which instructions apply afterwards. Confirm when you should contact the clinic and when the plan will be reviewed.
Do not use somebody else’s experience as a timetable for your case. Comfort, treatment area and individual response belong in your discussion with the team.
Ten questions to save
- Does my concern need another assessment before treatment is discussed?
- Which area and objective are being assessed?
- How will manual lymphatic drainage be performed for the proposed area?
- Which information should I give the team?
- How will the team decide whether I am a suitable candidate?
- How are the number and spacing of sessions decided?
- When will the plan be reviewed?
- Is another treatment proposed, and what is its separate purpose?
- Which instructions will I receive after a session?
- What is included in the individual plan and quotation?

- ☐ I am not using the article to diagnose fluid retention.
- ☐ I know when the plan will be reviewed.
- ☐ I am not assuming a treatment combination or guaranteed result.
- ☐ I have aftercare instructions and a contact route.
