What varicectomy is

Varicectomy is a surgical procedure to remove sections of damaged or varicose superficial veins in the legs. The aim is to treat the veins identified during assessment and relieve the problems associated with them.

The plan is not the same for every patient. The extent of the veins, symptoms, circulation and medical history determine whether varicectomy is the appropriate choice.

Three ways to treat varicose veins

Not every varicose vein is treated the same way. After the assessment, the specialist recommends the method that suits the case:

  • Varicectomy (surgery): for more complicated cases, surgical removal of the damaged sections of superficial veins, in Aura’s operating theatre.
  • Sclerotherapy: injections that close small veins and visible capillaries, without surgery. More about sclerotherapy
  • Laser for varicose veins: endovenous laser (EVLA/EVLT), in which a laser fibre is inserted into the vein and closes it from the inside, without large incisions; and surface laser for capillaries and small visible veins.

Who it may be suitable for

A consultation may be considered when a patient has visible varicose veins, heaviness, discomfort, swelling or other problems in the lower limbs. The specialist assesses whether symptoms are related to the veins and whether surgery or another option is needed.

The assessment covers coexisting conditions, medicines, previous procedures, clotting problems and expectations for the result and recovery.

The process at Aura

  1. Initial enquiry and arranging the consultation.
  2. Specialist assessment and identification of the veins to be treated.
  3. Explanation of the procedure, preparation, anaesthesia and individual plan.
  4. Varicectomy in Aura’s operating theatre.
  5. Monitoring after surgery and instructions for movement and care.
  6. Follow-up appointments until the plan is completed.

Preparation and surgery

The team provides instructions about tests, medicines, eating, hygiene and organising the day of surgery. Changes to medicines are made only as instructed by the team.

On the day of the procedure, the plan and treatment area are confirmed. The technique, type of anaesthesia and duration are determined according to the case.

Recovery and follow-up appointments

After surgery, the patient is monitored and receives instructions about walking, dressings or compression, wound care, activity and follow-up appointments. Temporary bruising, swelling or discomfort may occur. Recovery time and the return to activity vary with the extent of surgery and the individual’s response.

Results

The result is assessed during follow-up appointments. The aim is to treat the veins identified in the plan and improve the problems associated with them. Progress depends on the condition of the veins, the extent of the procedure and postoperative care.

The price of varicectomy

The price depends on the assessment, extent of the veins, technique, anaesthesia and surgeon selected. Aura prepares an individual quotation after consultation, with competitive prices for the Albanian and regional market.
