Aura Medical Clinic

Lipofilling and dermal filler may both be part of a conversation when you want to discuss facial volume or contour, but they are not the same procedure. Lipofilling is the surgical transfer of your own fat from a donor area to a recipient area. Hyaluronic-acid dermal filler is injectable material placed in soft tissues to add or restore volume and define contours.

The useful question is not which option is better overall. It is what needs to be assessed for your goal, anatomy, the areas involved and your plan. A consultation explains what may be discussed for your case before a decision is made.

The difference at a glance

What are you comparing? Lipofilling Dermal filler
Material The patient’s fat is taken, processed and placed in a recipient area. Injectable material; Aura uses hyaluronic-acid filler.
Type of procedure A surgical procedure involving a donor area and a recipient area. An injectable treatment in soft tissues.
Aim that may be discussed Restoring or adding volume, improving contour or correcting a selected irregularity. Volume, contour, facial harmony, symmetry or certain lines and folds.
What shapes the plan Donor and recipient areas, available donor fat, the extent of the procedure and the surgical plan. Area, anatomy, product, amount and goal.

This table is a starting point for a conversation, not a way to choose a procedure yourself. Neither treatment is determined by a photograph, a pre-set amount or a requested result alone.

When the conversation starts with transferring your own fat

Lipofilling uses the patient’s own fat. During the procedure, fat is taken from a planned area, processed and placed in the recipient area. The surgeon therefore assesses both the area from which fat may be taken and the area where a change in volume or contour is being discussed.

Planning also includes surgical preparation, the procedure and care for both areas after surgery. Swelling, bruising, tenderness or discomfort may occur in the donor and treated areas after lipofilling. The result develops gradually during healing: some transferred fat integrates into the recipient area, while some may be absorbed.

When the conversation starts with injectable filler

At Aura, hyaluronic-acid dermal filler is used for goals involving facial volume, contour and harmony. A consultation may cover lip volume and contour, restoring volume in selected areas, symmetry or certain lines and folds.

The product, amount and technique are not selected in advance; they are determined after assessment of the area and anatomy. Temporary swelling, redness, bruising, tenderness or itching may occur after injection. The service page explains that results and duration vary according to the product, area, amount, anatomy and individual response.

Why assessment is part of the choice

For lipofilling, the consultation assesses the goal, proportions, tissue quality and possible donor supply. For filler, the assessment focuses on the face, anatomy, goal and previous procedures. Medical history, allergies, medicines and recent treatments should be discussed in both cases.

There is no universal winner. Lipofilling is not simply a version of filler, and filler does not involve taking fat from another area. If you have more than one concern, describe each during the consultation; this article does not assume that the procedures should be combined.

Five questions to ask at consultation

  1. Does my goal relate to volume, contour, symmetry or another concern?
  2. What needs to be assessed for the facial area and, for lipofilling, for a possible donor area?
  3. Why is a surgical procedure or injectable filler being discussed for my goal?
  4. What does preparation, aftercare and follow-up involve for the proposed plan?
  5. How will the result be assessed, and what does the individual quotation include?

A short checklist to save

  • ☐ I have noted the volume or contour change I want to discuss.
  • ☐ I have prepared information about my medical history, allergies, medicines and previous procedures.
  • ☐ I will ask which areas each procedure involves.
  • ☐ I will ask about limitations, aftercare and signs that require contact.
  • ☐ I will understand the follow-up plan before deciding.
