Liposuction removes localised fat to improve the contour of an area. Lipofilling uses fat taken from one area of the body to add or restore volume in another. Both involve fat and contouring, but they address different questions: do you want to reduce an area or add volume somewhere else?

This distinction is a starting point for a conversation with the surgeon, not a way to choose the procedure yourself. The plan depends on your anatomy, tissue quality and the change you would like.

The difference at a glance

What are you comparing? Liposuction Lipofilling
Aim Removing localised fat deposits and improving contour. Restoring or adding volume and improving contour using your own fat.
Areas in the plan The area or areas from which fat will be removed. Both the donor area, where fat is taken, and the recipient area, where it is placed.
Starting question “Which area would I like to contour?” “Where would I like more volume, and which area could be the donor site?”
What is clarified at consultation The area, skin, objective and extent of the plan. The donor and recipient areas, tissue quality and the appropriate amount of volume.

Liposuction is not a substitute for overall weight loss. With lipofilling, it is not enough to consider only the area where more volume is wanted: the area from which fat will be taken must also be assessed.

Start with the change you would like

Instead of arriving at the consultation with only a procedure name in mind, try to describe your goal in your own words. For example: “I would like to discuss the contour of my abdomen” or “I want to understand whether volume can be restored in this area”.

The surgeon can connect this goal with an assessment of your body and tissues. For liposuction, this includes the area and the quality of the skin. For lipofilling, the discussion covers the fat available in the donor area, the recipient area and the planned distribution of the fat.

Results and recovery are individual. With lipofilling, some transferred fat may be reabsorbed during healing; the result is assessed gradually at follow-up appointments. Expectations and follow-up should therefore be discussed for your own case, rather than taken from someone else’s experience.

Five questions for the surgeon

  1. Which part of my goal involves removing fat, and which involves adding volume?
  2. What does the assessment of my skin and tissues indicate about the change I would like?
  3. If we discuss lipofilling, which would be the donor and recipient areas?
  4. Is there a reason to discuss both procedures for my case, or just one?
  5. What should I plan for aftercare, recovery and follow-up appointments?

Notes to take to your consultation

  • ☐ I have written down the area where I would like a change.
  • ☐ I can explain whether I want less volume, more volume or an improvement in contour.
  • ☐ I have identified my main priority.
  • ☐ I have noted my questions about recovery and organising everyday life.
  • ☐ I want to understand what can realistically be aimed for and how the result will be assessed.
