Intravenous therapy: what should you ask before consultation?
Before a consultation about intravenous therapy, write down why you are enquiring, gather relevant reports or test results, and prepare a list of medicines, supplements, allergies and previous reactions. The central questions are why this exact product and an intravenous route are being proposed, which alternatives should be discussed, how you would be monitored and reassessed, what follow-up would involve, and what the quotation covers.
Do not begin by choosing an infusion from its name. Begin with the health question or goal and the information needed for an individual assessment. IV iron and NAD+ are used below only to illustrate two different assessment pathways. They are not interchangeable options for the same concern.
Your consultation worksheet at a glance
| Topic | What to note or bring | The question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Reason for enquiring | A symptom, result, diagnosis, referral or goal, including when it began. | What needs to be assessed before deciding whether any intravenous therapy is appropriate? |
| Results and records | Relevant tests, reports or referral information, with their dates. | Which results are needed, how recent must they be, and is anything else required? |
| Medical history | Health conditions, previous treatment and any recent change that may matter. | Which part of my history affects the proposal or needs a different assessment first? |
| Medicines and allergies | Prescription and non-prescription medicines, supplements, allergies and previous reactions to medicines or infusions. | Could any of these affect the product, timing, monitoring or alternatives? |
| Product and route | The exact name of the proposed product and what you have been told about the plan. | Why is this product being proposed, and why by the intravenous route in my case? |
| Alternatives | Anything already tried or suggested, plus options you want to understand. | What are the alternatives, including another route or not starting treatment now? |
| Monitoring and follow-up | Questions about the period before, during and after administration and your ability to return. | What will be monitored, what should I report, and how will the plan be reassessed? |
| Quotation | The written estimate and any item you do not understand. | What is included, what is charged separately, and what could change the total? |
The worksheet is a way to structure a conversation. It cannot determine a diagnosis, suitability, product or protocol.
Start with the reason for your enquiry
An enquiry may follow a test result, an existing diagnosis or referral, previous treatment, a symptom that needs explaining, or general interest. Record the sequence in your own words and separate what you know from what you are assuming.
Tiredness, for example, can have many causes. It does not by itself show iron deficiency and is not enough to decide on IV iron or another infusion. Ask what first needs to be assessed and whether your concern calls for a different diagnostic or treatment pathway.
Prepare these questions:
- What specific problem or goal are we assessing?
- What information is missing before a proposal can be made?
- How would we distinguish a measurable change from a general impression?
- What cannot be promised from this treatment?
What to bring
Ask Aura in advance which records are required for your type of consultation. A practical list may include:
- relevant results with the test date and laboratory name;
- reports, referrals or treatment summaries connected to your enquiry;
- prescription and non-prescription medicines and supplements, with doses if known;
- allergies and previous reactions to medicines, intravenous products or procedures;
- information about earlier treatment and how its response was assessed;
- your questions and your practical availability for later checks or tests.
Do not assume that an older result remains sufficient. Ask whether it should be sent ahead, repeated or accompanied by another document.
Two examples, two assessment pathways
| Example | Where the conversation starts | Useful questions |
|---|---|---|
| Intravenous iron | With an individual assessment of iron status, relevant results, history and alternatives, not with tiredness alone. | Which results support or do not support the proposal? Why is the intravenous route being discussed? Which product and plan would be used, and how would reassessment work? |
| Intravenous NAD+ | With the stated reason for enquiring, history, expectations and clarification of the exact product and the limits of the proposal. | What defined goal is being discussed? What is known and uncertain about the proposed product? How would response be assessed, and which alternatives are relevant? |
These are not two answers to the same question. An assessment for iron does not justify NAD+, and an interest in NAD+ does not indicate iron deficiency. Each discussion requires its own rationale, product, monitoring and review plan.
Why this product and why an intravenous route?
The label intravenous therapy does not tell you what the product contains, why it has been selected or how it would be used. Before deciding, ask for clear answers to the following questions:
- What is the exact product name, and what does it contain?
- Which information from my assessment supports this proposal?
- Why is intravenous administration being proposed instead of another route?
- How would the dose, duration and any need for another session be decided?
- What would postpone, change or stop the plan?
- What are the limits of the outcome that can reasonably be discussed in my case?
If an answer depends on the product or your results, ask for that dependency to be made explicit in your plan rather than presented as a general rule.
Alternatives belong in the decision
A proposal is easier to understand when it is compared with alternatives that address the reason for your enquiry. Ask whether another treatment, another route, further assessment or not starting treatment at that point is relevant. Then ask about the rationale and limitations of each path.
Do not turn this into a choice between IV iron and NAD+. The relevant alternative should be connected to the issue being assessed, not simply to another infusion with a different name.
Monitoring, leaving the clinic and reassessment
Details may differ by product and plan, so use concrete questions:
- What will be checked before starting, and who decides whether to proceed?
- What will be monitored during administration, and how often?
- Which sensations or signs should I report immediately?
- What criteria will be used before I leave after administration?
- Whom should I contact if a concern develops later?
- When will reassessment occur, what information will it use, and what could change the plan?
Do not assume another session simply because the first one took place. Ask which result, review or decision would support continuing.
How to read the quotation
Ask for a written quotation once the plan has been clarified. Does it include the consultation, tests, product and dose, administration, monitoring and follow-up, or is any of that charged separately? Is the estimate for one session or a wider plan, and what could change after reassessment?
A single price without a product name or a description of what is included does not allow a like-for-like comparison. Do not assume either a standard session count or a guaranteed result from a package.
