Aura Medical Clinic

When researching hair transplantation, DHI and FUE are often presented as two alternatives from which you must choose. In fact, the names describe different parts of the process: FUE describes the individual extraction of follicular units from the donor area, while DHI describes the implantation of grafts into the recipient area.

The methods are not necessarily mutually exclusive: a DHI plan may involve individual follicular-unit extraction followed by direct implantation. Aura Medical Clinic considers DHI the more advanced and most successful technique. Direct implantation gives the team precise control over the hairline, angle, direction and distribution of the grafts. Aura therefore prefers DHI when the individual assessment shows that it is suitable.

The difference at a glance

What are you comparing? DHI FUE
Stage described Direct implantation of grafts. Individual extraction of follicular units.
Main area of focus The recipient area, where grafts are placed according to the plan. The donor area, from which follicles are collected individually.
What is planned Hairline, angle, direction and distribution. Donor supply, the planned number of grafts and preservation of the area.
Scarring DHI does not itself define the extraction method; scarring also depends on that stage and individual healing. It does not create the linear incision associated with the strip method, but individual extractions may leave small scars.
Aura’s position Aura’s preferred technique, which it considers more advanced and most successful. An important extraction technique that may form part of a DHI plan.
Useful question Why does Aura prefer DHI for my case, and how will the grafts be placed? How will follicular units be collected and the donor area preserved in my case?

The table explains how the two stages relate and why Aura prefers DHI. An individual assessment determines whether DHI is suitable and how extraction and implantation should be organised.

What should be assessed before planning

A technique name is not enough to plan a hair transplant. The consultation considers the pattern and progression of hair loss, the scalp, the quality and density of the donor area, the extent of the recipient area, hair characteristics, medical history and expectations.

The donor area has a limited supply, so preserving it is central to the plan. In the recipient area, attention turns to the hairline, direction, angle and distribution of the grafts. Planning should also recognise that the surrounding natural hair may continue to thin.

Why does Aura prefer DHI?

Aura considers DHI the more advanced and most successful technique because direct implantation allows precise control over the placement of each graft, including the hairline, angle, direction and distribution. For suitable patients, it is therefore Aura’s preferred approach.

The individual result still depends on the donor area, the number and quality of grafts, planning, healing and future hair loss. The consultation determines whether DHI is suitable and how the plan should be organised.

What to expect over time

Temporary tenderness, swelling, redness or scabs may occur after the procedure. Instructions on washing, sleeping, activity, protecting the grafts and attending check-ups are adapted to the procedure and individual response.

New growth usually begins to become visible from the third month. It continues to develop gradually over the following months, and the final result is assessed at around month 12. This describes a gradual process, not a guaranteed result on a fixed date.

Questions for your consultation

  1. What is the pattern of my hair loss, and how may it progress over time?
  2. What are the quality and available supply of my donor area?
  3. How extensive is the recipient area, and what is a realistic goal to plan?
  4. Why is DHI recommended for my case, and how will extraction and implantation be organised?
  5. How will the hairline, angle, direction and distribution of the grafts be planned?
  6. How will the donor area be preserved for the future?
  7. What should I organise for aftercare, recovery and follow-up checks?
  8. Which factors determine the individual quotation for my case?

A short checklist before your appointment

  • ☐ I have noted the areas where I see thinning or missing hair.
  • ☐ I can explain the change I would like in my hairline or density.
  • ☐ I have noted any previous procedures or treatments I want to discuss.
  • ☐ I want to understand the extraction and implantation stages separately.
  • ☐ I have questions about recovery, follow-up and the gradual result.

For a closer look at each stage, read Aura Medical Clinic’s pages on DHI hair transplantation and FUE hair transplantation. An individual consultation can then clarify how extraction and implantation fit together in your plan.
